What did we do before podcasts? Who knows, because now they’re like a right arm to most of us, making journeys seem faster and chores less painful all over the globe. You know the drill. If there’s a market for it, there’s a podcast about it. But with the incredibly vast world of podcasts throwing up new options every day, how does anyone know where to begin?

Well, that’s where we come in. We’ve rounded up our favourites, from political podcasts that look behind the news to comedy podcasts with your favourite funny people, and plenty of those all-important investigative whodunnits to keep you up at night. If you’re looking to dig deeper into one genre, we’d recommend trying our specialist lists on for size (you’ll find them below). But for a full list of good, addictive podcasts of every genre, read on.

‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’ by Time Out

Oh, didn’t we mention? Here at Time Out, we love a good podcast so much, we only went and made our own! ‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’ is hosted by Time Out London’s editor Joe Mackertich, joining celebs for a walk through the best spots in their area of London. So far Joe’s had a pint with Derren Brown, Paloma Faith, Phil Wang and lots more, and season two promises even more of our favourite funny celebs. It’s silly, it’s funny, it’s got a hell of a lot of good recommendations and it always ends in a pub. What could be better?

Best podcasts to listen to

Serial

1. Serial

Okay, we know. It’s ‘Serial’. It’s been around since 2014. But this podcast is an absolute unadulterated cult classic, and for good reason. Series one changed the scope of the podcast world forever, paving the way for every brilliant investigative true crime podcast you’ve listened to this year. The first season delves into a murder case, for which the victim’s ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted. Following the podcast and subsequent media attention, in 2022, he was released. Season three was equally as groundbreaking, exploring the day-to-day happenings of an American courthouse. The best part? Season four is reportedly on its way. Find us a podcast as influential as ‘Serial’ – we’ll wait.

2. Hooked on Freddie

Some podcasts are funny. Some podcasts are scary. Some of them leave you with your jaw hanging open for most of it. And that’s exactly what you can expect from ‘Hooked on Freddie’, which tells the story of a man and his, er, relationship with a famous dolphin. We’re not going to get into it any more then that, but just know you’ll be hooked (get it?) from beginning to end. Ella Doyle

5. Normal Gossip

If you find yourself getting ridiculously invested in drama involving complete strangers, then Normal Gossip is the podcast for you. Each episode features host Kelsey McKinney and a special guest as they dive into an anonymous morsel of gossip submitted by listeners. Even though you don't know any of the people involved, you still feel the rush of hearing extremely juicy gossip as if they're close friends. (And it will not stop you from forming strong opinions of everyone involved!)

Do We Get To Win This Time?

6. Do We Get To Win This Time?

'Nam is the subject of The Ringer's endlessly fascinating ‘Do We Get To Win This Time? How Hollywood Made the Vietnam War’ podcast – and specifically 'Nam movies: the great, the totally out-there, and the ones with John Wayne in them. Hear Oliver Stone talking Platoon, revisit the controversy of The Deer Hunter, and have a toke on whatever the cast and crew of ‘Apocalypse Now’ was smoking back in the Philippines' jungle in 1976. There's real IQ in the storytelling, too, as host Brian Raftery explores what the war's ever-evolving filmography says about America.

Pod Save the UK

7. Pod Save the UK

Comedian Nish Kumar and journalist Coco Khan have turned the dumpster fire that is British politics into a podcast. And it slaps. Weekly episodes cover hot political news of the week,  from Tories Morris Dancing at lockdown parties to Speedy Sue trying to get out of a speeding ticket. It’s chatty, clever, funny and proudly partisan; Nish is a liberal standup; Coco’s nickname’s ‘leftwing Barbie’. But it’s what you’d expect from the sister pod of ‘Pod Save America’, the podcast launched in the wake of Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017, by former Obama staffers. Tune in, if only to hear the top tier nicknames pinned to Westminster Frontbenchers.

Strike Force Five

8. Strike Force Five

When dual strikes shut down Hollywood, this biweekly chat between five late-night hosts debuted as a pleasant enough listen. But the strike-supporting podcast hit hysterical heights at episode five, when a confusingly coordinated ‘Dating Game’ clone made Jimmy Fallon the punching bag for the rest of the crew – and for the remainder of the limited series’ run. The resulting conversation between him and Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver is an absolute joy that balances industry anecdotes with plenty of quick-witted ribbing.

The Retrievals
The New York Times

9. The Retrievals

Sometimes a podcast is simply the best way to tell an important story. ‘The Retrievals’, which investigates the true crime case of a nurse who stole fentanyl from women undergoing IVF treatment, is a perfect example. Through interviews with the survivors, the five-part podcast by Serial Productions and the New York Times has an often dark but incredibly gripping narrative. It takes a cold, hard look at women’s stories against the backdrop of women’s treatment in healthcare. Ella Doyle

Class of 88 With Will Smith

10. Class of 88 With Will Smith

You don’t need to be a die-hard hip-hop fan to love ‘Class of 88’, but if you are, you’re in for a treat. Presented by Will Smith, this limited series music podcast looks back at 1988, the year hip hop established itself as what became, in Smith’s words, ‘the genre of all genres’. ‘Class of 88’ is fun, punchy and full of 80s nostalgia, and is brought to life by a series of star-studded guests, from Queen Latifah to Public Enemy, who all have a great laugh looking back at the genre’s defining year. Ella Doyle
