The best brunch in Miami, from garden patios to fancy hotels and breezy waterfronts

The best brunch in Miami, from garden patios to fancy hotels and breezy waterfronts

Studies have shown that Miami knows how to brunch better than any other city. We should note that said studies were not conducted by proper research centers but rather by a team of hungover journalists in dire need of good eggs and a bloody mary. Over several years of indulging in breakfast-lunch hybrids in the early weekend hour of around 2pm (basically dawn in Miami), we have confidently determined the finest places to brunch in a city that makes brunch an unofficial sport (along with day drinking and al fresco dining). We're laying it all out below in our guide to the very best places to brunch in Miami, the unscientifically official Brunch Capital of the Planet.

Beyond the LGTBQ+ fun to look forward to this June, there are plenty of concerts, exhibitions, festivals and outdoor activities to get excited about—not to mention that visits to a Miami museum make for an excellent thing to do in Miami when it rains (it tends to do that quite a bit in June). It’s also the start of hurricane season in Miami, so brace for that too. Find a list of the best June events in Miami below. RECOMMENDED: The best things to do in Miami

Wynwood Pride

Wynwood Pride

For a long time, Miami had politely excused itself from partaking in annual World Pride Month celebrations. By June, the Miami sun is already hot enough to melt off even the most seasoned drag queen’s full face—and who wants to plan a parade in the midst of hurricane season Besides, New York pretty much has the East Coast covered when it comes to Pride festivities, and April’s Miami Beach Pride is a fun way to kick everything off. At least, this had been the thinking from 1995 until around five years ago, when Wynwood Pride was born. The annual Pride celebration on the mainland stands defiantly in the face of heat waves, tropical storms and gay flight to Fire Island, boldly asserting: We’re here, we’re queer and Miami’s LGBTQ+ community deserves the world—including a proper World Pride celebration alongside everyone else. The concept was to create a more music and performance-driven atmosphere in the heart of Miami’s booming arts district that appealed to different ages and underserved groups. “The core belief was to be a Pride for everyone,” says Liza Santana, Wynwood Pride’s founding spokesperson. When is Wynwood Pride 2024? Rather than a weekend-long festival as in previous years, Wynwood Pride 2024 spans World Pride Month with panels, parties and performances going down primarily over the weekends this June. So far, events include a kick-off party at the Arlo Wynwood (June 1) and a drag festival (June 8). Watch this space as more information is released.

The first gay bar in Wynwood, Miami opens its doors this weekend

The first gay bar in Wynwood, Miami opens its doors this weekend

Wynwood is finally getting a gay bar. Not a bar that occasionally throws gay parties on weeknights. Not a restaurant that hosts bachelorette-packed drag brunches. (Though those are all great, too). Willy's is the full-fledged, no-frills LGBTQ+ bar that's long been missing in the bustling mainland neighborhood known for its colorful street art and nightlife. Though Miami has an estimated 190,000 LGBTQ+ residents, the metro area has only a handful of gay clubs and bars, and most of them are across the bridge in Miami Beach.  "We want this bar to feel like it's been in the neighborhood for decades, and that the current Wynwood, with all its growth and gentrification, has been built around it," says Willy's cofounder, José Atencio.  Photograph: Courtesy Willy's Neighborhood Bar Atencio, Jor-El Garcia and Scott Bernardez are helping to recenter Miami's gay community, placing a stronger emphasis on locals. Six years ago this June, in tandem with World Pride Month, they launched Wynwood Pride. In that span, the grassroots fest has grown from a weekend-long party to a full month of Pride events across the city. (Previously, Miami's only Pride festivities played out during Miami Beach Pride, an annual celebration happening now, in the relatively cooler month of April.) This weekend's grand opening of Willy's Neighborhood Bar reinforces their original mission to carve out more space for those who call Miami home. "This has been a dream of ours since we started producing LGBTQ+ events

Find out which Miami restaurant earned a new Michelin Bib Gourmand award this year

Ahead of the Michelin Ceremony on April 18 in Tampa, the coveted global restaurant guide has just announced winners of its 2024 Bib Gourmand award winners for Florida. These are restaurants that offer a meal of "good quality at a good value," according to the guide's team of anonymous inspectors. This year, inspectors noted one new restaurant in Miami, in addition to two restaurants in Orlando and one in Tampa. Recipients will be honored on stage alongside those earning Michelin stars at the invitation-only ceremony at the Tampa EDITION hotel. Photograph: Courtesy Tâm Tâm In Miami, the latest Bib Gourmand award winner is Tam Tam. This friendly former pop-up shines on all fronts, but especially with its nostalgic, Saigon-inspired Vietnamese fare. That's why it's currently ranked No. 6 in our Time Out guide to the best restaurants in Miami.  “These restaurant selections prepare bold specialties with precision and intentionality, all at an excellent value,” says Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of the Michelin Guides. “Our inspectors delighted in the impressive flavors and are confident that foodies—both local and from afar—will too.” Here's what the anonymous inspector had to say about Tam Tam: Tam Tam (Vietnamese Cuisine) Husband-and-husband team Tam Pham and Harrison Ramhofer are throwing a party on their own terms. On the edge of downtown by the county courthouse, you won’t find a glamorous room, a DJ booth, or anybody in stilettos or designer sneakers. The

You can take a course on Taylor Swift at the University of Miami this fall

You can take a course on Taylor Swift at the University of Miami this fall

The University of Miami takes its responsibility to future generations very seriously. The most recent example: a new course tracing the genius of Taylor Swift. Earlier this month, enrollment opened for STC 290: The Mastermind of the Taylor Swift Brand, a strategic communications elective being offered this fall. The class, capped at 150 students, is open to all majors and fulfills the university's new Communication Literacy minor. Taught by associate professor Dr. Alyse Renee Lancaster, STC 290 examines Swift's meteoric rise, her massive cultural sway and the pivotal role social media has played in her billion-dollar brand. Students will unpack Swift's strategies for garnering her fiercely loyal, cross-generational global audience. The U isn't the only major university offering a course focused on the elite pop star. Berklee College of Music, Stanford and Rice Universities also have Taylor Swift-based classes this year, including classes covering the artist's song compositions and lyrical evolution. Last spring, the University of Missouri offered "Taylor Swiftory: History & Literature Through Taylor Swift." The University of Texas at Austin and New York University's Clive Davis Institute also taught courses covering her music in 2022. In Miami fashion, we're a bit more interested in learning about Swift's money and power. Will this city's influencer-obsessed youth have the attention spans to take notes?

Bro, the Miami accent is like, super sexy according to this new study

Bro, the Miami accent is like, super sexy according to this new study

Talk Miami to me, papi. This seems to be the consensus among a large portion of the internet—at least according to a new study conducted by consumer opinion platform Brandwatch and commissioned by the online casino and sportsbook review website PennStakes.com. Using data collected between February 2023 and February 2024, the "social listening" research study aimed to discern which accents are the most attractive across the U.S., and the "Miami" accent ranked number seven on the list. Whether you love it or hate it, anyone who's lived here long enough tends to adopt some degree of the Miami dialect (it's actually called Miami English, according to a distinguished linguistics professor). Whether or not we speak any Spanish, most of us also sprinkle in some Miami slang here and there, too. The Miami accent is sing-songy, with a heavy "L" sound and a high dose of Spanglish. It's certainly distinct, but is it sexy?  According to the research, it's at least more attractive than the Chicago, Minnesotan and New Orleans accents, which ranked below us in that order. On the other hand, the Midwestern and Boston accents ranked just above Miami. I mean, really? The Southern accent, a quintessential American drawl, ranked at the top.  So how did the study come to its findings? Analyzing the top 50 most common accents, Brandwatch highlighted every mention of each accent online over the past year, breaking down how many of these posts were praising the accent in some way. Three Miami chefs are finalists for 2024 James Beard Awards

Three Miami chefs are finalists for 2024 James Beard Awards

Congratulations are in order for three chefs from two of our favorite Miami restaurants for being selected as 2024 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards finalists. Chef Valerie Chang of Maty's in Midtown is up for Best Chef: South, while Jesus Brazon and Manuel Brazon of Caracas Bakery in Doral and MiMo have been shortlisted in the Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker category. Only one other Florida restaurant, Kaya in Orlando, is up for an award this year. In January, the James Beard Foundation announced the semifinalists for this year's Restaurant and Chef Awards, which included three additional names in Miami hospitality (Zak the Baker for Outstanding Bakery, Macchialina for Outstanding Wine Program and Chef Tristen Epps of Ocean Social for Best Chef: South). Today's announcement narrows down the list to official nominees and also names honorees for the foundation's annual Achievement Awards in the categories of Leadership, Lifetime Achievement and Humanitarian of the Year. Read the full James Beard announcement on their website. Along with the Michelin Guide, the annual James Beard Awards set the standard for culinary excellence, highlighting the best of the best in America's hospitality industry. Though we won't know who the winners are until June's 2024 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards at Lyric Opera of Chicago, being named as a nominee is a major achievement in its own right, especially for the historically underrepresented state of Florida. Rolling Loud Miami will return to Hard Rock Stadium this December

Rolling Loud Miami will return to Hard Rock Stadium this December

Miami’s flagship hip-hop festival Rolling Loud has become one of the biggest rap and hip-hop festivals in the country—even the world. Since its inception in 2015, it's grown to include a stop in California and abroad in Portugal, Germany and Thailand. In that same span, Rolling Loud expanded to a full weekend-long festival, with just about every rapper you can think of gracing its stage: Future, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, J. Cole, Lil Yachty, Gucci Mane and so many more. Though it originated at Bayfront Park, Rolling Loud Miami has since made a new home at Hard Rock Stadium. And now, for its tenth anniversary, the festival has announced that it's moving from the hot summer months to December for the first time. Rolling Loud Miami will return to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens from December 13 through 15, 2024. The three-day blowout fest will be the crown jewel of Rolling Loud's year-long "10 Years of Rolling Loud," commemorating a decade of wins with epic celebrations in California, Austria and Thailand. As has become its legacy, the upcoming 2024 festival in Miami will bring together talent from across subgenres, from legendary headliners to less established artists on the come-up. Though the Miami festival lineup has not yet been announced, the recent Rolling Loud California at Hollywood Park featured headlining performances from Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, Future x Metro Boomin, ¥$, Don Toliver, Sexyy Red, Bryson Tiller, Summer Walker, and more, with guest a

Whether you've booked a last-minute trip to Miami, forgot you have friends coming into town or just need a few low-commitment options for going with the flow, this city has a surprisingly wide selection of solid spots to eat that don't require booking months in advance. We say "surprisingly" because, these days, scoring a table at the best restaurants in Miami has become a feat as insurmountable as turning left in Edgewater or dodging OnlyFans models in Brickell. As a public service to all the procrastinators out there (shout out everyone who lives here), we've compiled a list of tried-and-true restaurants where you don't need a reservation. And who would know better than Miami locals? We turned to our followers to get their go-to spots for an amazing, last-minute meal. This $500 omakase on a boat is your next Miami dining flex

Hear us out: There's still room for innovation in Miami's oversaturated omakase space.  The chef's tasting-style sushi trend has exploded across the city in the last couple of years, making it difficult to parse which are actually worth the exorbitant price tags. To help, we keep a regularly updated guide to the best omakase in Miami. Still, after sampling a rainbow of tuna, uni, salmon and snapper that's torched, smoked and dry-aged, topped with caviar, truffles and foie—you get the idea. They tend to get repetitive. But have you ever chartered an omakase boat? Normally hidden in a small, dimly lit room off Española Way, the highly-rated Sushi Bar Miami Beach can now be enjoyed on the open water, with Biscayne Bay and the glittering city skyline as your backdrop. We got to try it, and this is hands down our favorite new way to experience omakase. Miracle Mile is one of Time Out's Coolest Streets in the World

Miracle Mile is one of Time Out's Coolest Streets in the World

Have you heard? Miami is home to one of the coolest streets in the world. Miracle Mile is No. 26 on Time Out’s annual rankings of the Coolest Streets in the World. As the main artery of Coral Gables' business district, this palm and oak tree-lined street boasts plenty of independent shops and some of Miami’s best restaurants (including several that recently earned nods from the Michelin Guide). Like the rest of its historic neighborhood (which we touted as among the world’s coolest in 2023), Miracle Mile and its surrounding promenades feature beautifully maintained Mediterranean Revival-style architecture with stucco facades and arched doorways. There are also lively events year-round, like the two-day Carnaval on the Mile festival every March. The Coral Gables outpost of one of our favorite restaurants in Miami—the Mediterranean-inspired Motek—resides under telltale yellow and white striped awnings along Miracle Mile. During Vinya Table's happy hour (daily 3-6pm), you can sip somm-curated glasses of wine starting at $8 and excellent cocktails like the Whitecap Negroni starting at $9. Peruse the market shelves in the back for a few to-go bottles, too. Beyond the food and drinks, Miracle Mile is famed for its shopping—it's a global destination for bridal boutiques—as well as its landmarks, like the grandiose, Beaux Arts-style Colonnade Building and the City Hall constructed from local limestone. Craving some culture? Catch a show at the historic Miracle Theatre. Built in 194

Here’s how Miss Peaches and Dave Portnoy spend their perfect day in Miami

Here’s how Miss Peaches and Dave Portnoy spend their perfect day in Miami

What’s the cure for a broken heart? Of course, the unconditional love of a dog. That, or a lavish shopping spree. In the case of Dave Portnoy, it was both. After ending things with his girlfriend over the holidays and, by extension, their dog Brody, the Barstool Sports founder famed for his one-bite pizza reviews knew he’d find puppy love again, it was just a matter of when. Then, on Valentine’s Day, Miss Peaches came home. “It was love at first sight,” Portnoy tells me from his Miami home. The six-year-old rescue pitbull from Georgia (her age is a best guess) is draped across “Papa’s” lap. Together, they overlook Portnoy’s infinity pool and, beyond that, the sparkling Biscayne Bay. Video: Falyn Wood for Time Out “She doesn't have a mean bone in her body, after everything she went through,” he says when asked what they love most about each other. “And I think she likes me because I'm rich, so she has all this stuff that she’s never had.” Portnoy’s delivery is characteristically brash, which can rub some the wrong way, especially when it comes to the pizza reviews. With Miss Peaches, though, his bravado melts away. In a few short weeks, Portnoy has dropped thousands on his new lady, showering her with everything from a designer doggy stroller to luxury bowls and locally sourced food. “She does this thing where she just kind of paws at me, and then she walks back and forth over my face, essentially, until I'm up,” he says, describing their typical morning. “It's a good way

Fooq’s is back—and upping the ante in Miami’s ultra-trendy Little River neighborhood

Fooq’s is back—and upping the ante in Miami’s ultra-trendy Little River neighborhood

If Little River wasn’t already on your radar, surely it will be now. Miami’s burgeoning culinary and cultural hub just minutes north of the Design District and Little Haiti welcomes its latest buzzy resident with the forthcoming reopening of Fooq’s. The Downtown Mediterranean nook from David Foulquier’s We All Gotta Eat Hospitality was beloved for its flavorful home-style cuisine like charcoal-grilled kebabs and Persian stews. It made for an excellent stop for an elevated but casual meal before walking over to a show at the nearby Adrienne Arsht Center. Fooq’s has been closed since 2021, when Foulquier’s Eleventh Street Pizza took over the space during the pandemic. Unlike its previous address, the new Fooq’s will live in a ground-up, 9,000-square-foot build located at 150 NW 73rd Street. The restaurant is set to open towards the end of 2024. The Swedish firm has designed numerous famed restaurants, including the World’s 50 Best and three-Michelin-starred restaurant, Frantzén. The two-level space with an outdoor lounge will incorporate design elements from Fooq’s heritage, a contemporary cross-section of traditional Middle Eastern and Moroccan influences.
