The 50 best cities in the world in 2024

The 50 best cities in the world in 2024

What makes a city great? Some would say it’s all about buzzing neighbourhoods, affordable food and drink and a mighty selection of things to do, from art galleries and museums to live music and theatre. Others might highlight things like the happiness of its locals, access to green space and strong community vibes. We factor in all that and more in our annual survey, which asks city-dwellers around the world to tell us what it’s like to live, work and play in their hometowns right now. Thanks to the opinions and insights of locals on the ground and our global network of city experts, we’re able to create a global ranking of the world’s best cities – and the 2024 results are in. As in previous years, the basis of the ranking remains our global survey of the people who know their city best: the locals. Working with research company Potentia Insight, we surveyed thousands of city-dwellers about the quality and affordability of food, culture and nightlife in their city. We also asked locals how their city makes them feel: are they happy there? Is it a beautiful place? Is it easy to make social connections? Their thousands of responses gave us a unique insight into the reality of living in the world’s greatest cities right now. Now that international travel is forecast to bounce back to the highest levels since 2019, many travellers will be planning a city break this year – so in 2024, we added a little extra weight to a city’s global appeal. Each survey respondent was asked which

The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

It’s that time again. Every year, we ask thousands of city-dwellers to tell us the coolest spots in their cities. What are the places locals love and visitors flock to? Where are the exciting new openings across food, drink and culture? Where are people going out, hanging out and having fun? For the sixth year running, the results are in. Over 12,000 people had their say in this year’s shortlist, naming the neighbourhoods in their hometowns where everyone wants to be right now. Then, we narrowed down the selection with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else. To create and rank the final list, we considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life. In 2023, our neighbourhoods are more global than ever before. The rise and rise in post-pandemic digital nomadism has led to an explosion of brand-new community spaces, multi-purpose culture centres and more cafés than we can count on two hands. But while most of these neighbourhoods have experienced a transformation over recent years, they remain resolutely local at heart. Slick new developments and cool cafés might bring in new crowds, but neighbourhood stalwarts – from old pubs to family greengrocers – keep it real.  The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year are, therefore, places with big personalities. Each area’s diversity is reflected in its food, culture and festivals. Community is key: local

Time Out’s favorite airport lounges in the U.S.

At Time Out, we’re all about helping you see the world on the cheap and leading you to the best travel deals whenever possible. But sometimes, even the thrifty seek a bit of luxury on vacation, a place to comfortably kick their feet up before it’s time to squeeze into that basic economy seat. I mean, who can turn down a $99 flight to Europe? Not us! For that, we love an airport lounge. These once exclusive domains for the most privileged passengers have dramatically changed since American Airlines opened the first in NY’s LaGuardia Airport in 1939. What started as an invitation-only club for folks to enjoy a pre-board cocktail has evolved into a massive network of areas for travelers to rest, work, refuel and idle before a flight. Today, there are more lounges than ever, offering all kinds of amenities (pickleball, anyone?) and greater access for all. Headed to the airport soon? We asked Time Out editors and frequent contributors to share their favorite lounges in the U.S. Whether you're lounge-curious or a pro looking for a new respite when you fly, you'll find helpful intel for your next trip below.

The world’s busiest airport is right here in the U.S.

The Airports Council International (ACI) World has unveiled data that reveals 2023’s top ten busiest airports in the world. Airport rankings are based on data gathered from over 2,600 airports across more than 180 countries and territories worldwide, and for the third year in a row Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport tops the list as the busiest airport in the world, with 104.7 million passengers in 2023. Overall industry numbers reveal a rebound in global passengers of nearly 94 percent from pre-pandemic levels, with international travel fast approaching the level of domestic travel. Said ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira in a statement, “Global air travel in 2023 was chiefly fuelled by the international segment, propelled by several factors. Among these were the anticipated benefits from China’s reopening and a growing inclination towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions.” Five other U.S. airports made the list of the ten busiest in the world. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport fell one spot to number three as Dubai International Airport made gains to take the number two spot. Denver International Airport is the sixth busiest, followed by Los Angeles at number eight and Chicago at number nine. Here’s when to book the rest of your 2024 flights before prices peak

All eyes are on the summer travel season, but it’s never too early to start thinking ahead and planning for travel later in the year. Online booking site Hopper has released its Q2 Domestic Travel Index, which reveals good news for travelers as well as when to book flights before prices peak. Data shows that airfare prices are slightly lower than 2023 overall, but Hopper expects prices to begin rising starting in May. While airfare will not likely top pre-pandemic levels, it’s best to book before June, when airfare prices will peak at around $315 for one-way domestic flights. International fares are higher than pre-pandemic levels in most regions, so your best bet for a frugal tip is to travel domestically. According to Hopper, fares will rise 3 percent into December for the holiday season before dropping 11 percent in January. January will be the cheapest month of the year to book travel, followed by the fall shoulder season in September and October. Fares will then rise again into late spring and into the summer travel period. Domestic travelers are still heading to the country’s most popular destinations, but smaller cities like Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Cody, Wyoming and Bar Harbor, Maine are increasing in popularity. These destinations Hopper’s data also reveals level prices for hotels and car rentals. Now is the time to book a flight and plan for that summer vacation, before prices begin to rise next month.

Earth Day 2024: everything you need to know

Earth Day 2024 is just around the corner. While we all should strive to consider the Earth in our everyday choices, Earth Day serves as a reminder to be conscientious about the products we use and the waste we produce, and to keep sustainability in mind when we make choices. From sustainable cities to low-impact travel companies, we do have more ways to be mindful of the planet. Even NYC restaurants and bars are aiming to be more sustainable. This Earth Day you can participate in an Earth Day event near you, and learn about how you can help protect the planet and combat climate change. What is Earth Day? Earth Day is held each year on April 22 to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote eco-friendly practices. It was first held in 1970 in the U.S., and has since grown to include a range of events around the world. Why is Earth Day on April 22? Earth Day was first proposed to be held on March 21, 1970—the first day of Spring. It was later changed to April 22, a date between colleges’ spring break and final exams, so that it could be held as a “teach-in” to focus on environmental concerns. What is the Earth Day theme for 2024? Each year, Earth Day has a theme that focuses on a particular environmental concern. The theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics. The theme aims to raise awareness of plastic pollution, reduce single-use plastic consumption, demand an end to fast-fashion, invest in technologies that can reduce plastic use and demand a 60% reduction in t

Cicadas are set to appear in a “double brood emergence” this year

The cicadas are coming! This spring, billions of cicadas will dig their way out of the ground and unleash their deafening buzz on parts of the South and Midwest. Two large broods will emerge at the same time, overlapping in a rare “double brood emergence,” something that hasn’t happened with these two specific broods since 1803.
