The 100 best TV shows of all time you have to watch

The 100 best TV shows of all time you have to watch

Television used to be considered one of the lowest forms of entertainment. It was derided as ‘the idiot box’ and ‘the boob tube’. Edward R Murrow referred to it as ‘the opiate of the masses’, and the phrase ‘I don’t even own a TV’ was considered a major bragging right. And for a long time, it was hard to say that television’s poor reputation was undeserved.  A lot has changed. Television is now the dominant medium in basically all of entertainment, to the degree that the only thing separating movies and TV is the screen you’re watching on. Now, if you don’t own a television – or a laptop or a tablet or a phone – you’re basically left out of the cultural conversation completely. The shift in perception is widely credited to the arrival of The Sopranos, which completely reinvented the notion of what a TV show could do. But that doesn’t mean everything that came before is primordial slurry. While this list of the greatest TV shows ever is dominated by 21st century programs, there are many shows that deserve credit for laying the groundwork for this current golden age. Chiseling them down to a neat top 100 is difficult, so we elected to leave off talk shows, variety shows and sketch comedy, focusing on scripted, episodic dramas, comedies and miniseries.  So don’t touch that dial – these are the greatest TV shows of all-time. The best things to do in London in April 2024

April is an underrated month if you ask us. Winter is finally over and we’ve all started to emerge from hibernation, ready to properly commit to socialising again. The sun has put in a few appearances, London’s parks and gardens are in full bloom and the city feels alive with all the possibilities of summer, but without all the sunburn and sweltering, sleepless nights.  There’s also a handful of spring music festivals, some cracking art exhibitions and theatre (including the first open-air shows of the year) and plenty more amazing things going on around the city.  Check out our roundup of the best of them, and start planning an amazing month now.

The 22 best rooftop bars in the world

The 22 best rooftop bars in the world

There are plenty of things that make a bar great, but a show-stopping view? That’s a real gamechanger. What could be more elegant than sitting up high, cocktail-in-hand taking in some sweet, sweet scenery. Whether you’re perched on the umpteenth floor of a Singaporean skyrise or plonked atop a south London car park, rooftop bars are about the experience just as much as the drinks.  Sure, many of them are swanky places, but lots more are pretty down-to-earth hangouts, too (despite, obvs, being pretty far from the ground). Featuring top-notch venues from all over the globe, our favourite rooftop bars range from the cha-ching to the chilled. But they’ve all got one thing in common – a stonking view. The 25 best things to do in Brighton right now

The 25 best things to do in Brighton right now

We might be biased, but Brighton is a day-trip destination like no other. It has the perfect mix of an old-school, nostalgia pier (yep, there’s an arcade), and vibrant, winding shopping streets, full of seriously trendy veggie and vegan cafés and long-standing markets for thrifting, so there’s plenty to explore, whether the sun is out or not.  Oh, and there’s the beach. And don’t mind the pebbles – the seafront is lined with ice-cream shops, bustling beach bars, and now the long-awaited Sea Lanes (opened in June 2023), you can spend whole days here sipping tinnies and tucking into fish and chips. Just beware of the seagulls. The 24 best pubs in the UK

The 24 best pubs in the UK

There are an awful lot of things to moan about in the UK, but pubs are not one of them. Pubs are for your friendly catch ups, your Sunday roasts, and your mid-summer sun traps, and we love it all. We really do.  Everyone’s got a favourite (probably the one closest to the end of your road), and so do we. But some pubs are really good for food. Others are great for craft beer. The very best pubs do it all. With that in mind, here we are: the best pubs in the whole of the UK. In the UK, wild swimming seems to be having a bit of a moment. More people than ever are stripping off and diving into the nation’s chilly rivers and lakes – and, tbqh, we’re absolutely here for it. Whether you’re doing it for fitness and wellbeing or just a cheeky thrill, wild swimming is bloomin’ great. And the UK certainly isn’t short of fabulous places to take a natural dip. V&A Performance Festival

V&A Performance Festival

Plenty of things have happened on April 23, but Shakespeare’s birthday has gotta be one of the most monumental in history. No wonder the V&A sets aside 10 days for a programme of live performances, talks, screenings and workshops (plus more) by actors, musicians, dancers and comedians around the Bard’s day of birth. This year’s festival marks 100 years of the museum’s Theatre and Performance collection, and it’ll follow a ‘remastered’ theme. In celebration of Record Store Day, audio company Bowers & Wilkins will create an interactive installation of sound equipment, and there’ll be screenings from the National Video Archive of Performance, including from the all-female performance of Julius Caesar (Donmar Warehouse, 2013). There’ll also be a special Friday Late to look at the next waves of feminism through performance, but there's plenty more where that came from.

Film Africa

Film Africa

There’s an excellent roster of big and small film festivals in London, and The Royal African Society has been bringing us a curated programme of the best of African films since 2011. Feature-length premiers, shorts and documentary screenings will be accompanied by Q&As with directors, panel discussions and workshops. Opening night will feature a screening of the award-winning Dahomey, directed by Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop, and closing night will feature Black Tea, a romantic drama by Mauritian director Abderrahmane Sissako. But the festival runs for a little over a week in the autumn, so have a look at the website for more info on the programme.

Dash The Henge Presents SXSE x RSD24

Records stores in London really are rinsing this celebratory day, with events kicking off as early as 9 am. That’s right – Dash The Henge Store (Camberwell) is marking Record Store Day for the second year in a row, with DJs, bands and other artists taking over four different venues across the city. Exciting Liverpool-London based band Luvcat will be performing at The Old Dispensary and DJ duo Camberwell Connection will be at The Bear. Super cool new pub The Greyhound in Peckham will also be hosting a late night after party, curated by The Cause, a Berlin-based duo who brought us the venue.

The Embassy Gardens Drive-In Cinema

The Embassy Gardens Drive-In Cinema

Cinemas are fun, but generally speaking they’re more of a wintery activity – unless you make it al-fresco, that is. Enter the Drive-In at Embassy Gardens! That’s right, the west London development is hosting back to back screenings of some classic, crowd-pleasing blockbusters (The Lion King and Mamma Mia, to name a couple), interspersed with trivia challenges and lucky drawers at the family screenings. Essential cinema snacks (and mock or cocktails) will be rustled up by The Alchemist, and there’ll be some pic ‘n’ mix, of course, too. So if you’re keen to live out your Grease-style date-night fantasy (and your car is ULEZ-compliant), book your tickets. Don’t worry – there’s a deck chair or bring-your-own-blanket option for all the licenseless townies as well.

Chelsea in Bloom

Chelsea in Bloom

Chelsea’s annual floral art show is back, bringing luscious colour to King’s Road, Sloane Street and other iconic locations.  As ever, the streets and squares and more than 120 businesses of SW10 will be transformed with wonderful floral displays created by retailers in the borough, and you can even vote for your favourites from 5 pm on Monday May 20. This year’s theme is ‘Floral Feasts’, so expect high-class horticulture inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar (by the team at All For Love London), Willy Wonka (by Maison de Fleurs) along with The Lady and The Tramp on Sloane Street and a take on Winnie The Pooh on the Kings Road.

Headliners Jamie Jones and Joseph Capriati will preside over a slate of house, disco, techno and more, all surrounded by the pretty waterways and forests of this natural beauty spot. The lineup for the main stage includes the likes of Sarah Story (British DJ and radio producer from Radio 1 Future Dance) and Seth Troxler (Michigan-born record producer). London Eid at Westfield

London Eid at Westfield

This massive culmination of culture is marking its fifth consecutive year this April, and for the first time ever, both Westfield locations will be hosting the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. Both of the three-day weekenders will be packed to the rafters with Halal food stalls and ops to get stuck into some brilliant workshops, so make sure you’re one of the 300,000 expected to head through those doors.  Much like previous years, there’ll be concessions of fashion, children’s books and boutique items, as well as Henna stations and live choir performances. However, in an exciting edition, award-winning artist Maaida Noor (who has collaborated with the likes of Dior and Harrods in the past) will be running watercolour workshops, where each participant will get to experiment with colours and techniques.

Estrella Galicia Gastronomy Month

Estrella Galicia Gastronomy Month

We’re blessed with Spanish restaurants in London, whether you’re after just a couple of tapas plates or an entire vat of paella. But making a comeback this spring, to bring us even more Iberican, Basque, Catalan and Andalusian delicacies (and everything in between), is Estrella Galicia Gastronomy Month. There are 21 events happening across the UK, plenty of which are in London. The Tapas Tours are a smorgasbord of mouthwatering food and (you guessed it) Estrella beer, all soundtracked by some cracking live entertainment, but there’s also Pour & Pair sessions, Tasting Menus and full-on Fiestas (such as at Boca a Boca in Fitzrovia). Ah, 2009. The year Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s VMA speech, ‘Avatar’ took over the box office, and Gaga released ‘The Fame Monster’. But it was also the year that east London was graced with what went on to become one of the area’s most iconic queer venues. That’s right – 2024 marks Dalston’s Superstore’s fifteenth birthday, so it’s time for a party. The venue has spent the last decade and a half showcasing pioneering local DJs, and has hosted the likes of Honey Dijon and The Blessed Madonna. This eleven-hour shindig will feature special guest psychedelic techno DJ Roza Terenz, homegrown talent DJ Karlie Marx plus performances from drag artist Fancy Shews! and many, many more.

Time Out Market is coming to Budapest

Time Out Market is coming to Budapest

Budapest is pretty magnificent – it drips with gorgeous Art Nouveau architecture, is dotted with fantastic ruin bars and boasts some of Europe’s best thermal baths and spas. Pair that with great nightlife and delicious food, and it’s no wonder we’ve decided to open a Time Out Market right in the heart of the city.  We welcomed Time Out Market Cape Town back in November, and Time Out Market Porto is well underway, set to open its doors in May. Now we can announce that Time Out Market Budapest will be opening next year, at the Corvin Palace at Blaha Lujza Square, on the ‘Pest’ side of the Danube. It’s a former department store, which opened back in 1926 but has recently been redeveloped to revive its dazzling Neoclassical splendour. ‘Corvin Palace is the oldest department store in Budapest … we are delighted to be welcoming Time Out Market Budapest to Corvin Palace soon,’ said Oliver Balogh and Viktor Balogh, minority owners of Corvin Palace.  The market will be home to the very best of the city’s food scene, with 14 kitchens for award-winning chefs and budding restaurateurs to rustle up their dishes, but plenty of much-loved local gems will be taking part, too.  All that food will make you thirsty, so there’ll also be four bars to choose from, and cocktails from exciting local mixologists are set to be on the menu. What’s more, there’ll be an event space, plus seats for 800 people.  Sandy Hayek, Time Out Market CEO, said: ‘The food scene is a great reflection of the city itsel

These are the best places to travel as a student this summer

Just because you want to travel on a budget, it doesn’t mean your opportunities are limited – there’re plenty of affordable travel destinations to visit this year.  And the same goes for the most budget-reliant demographic of society: students. Though studying often means your bank account really takes a beating, there are plenty of places you can head to for some not-so-spenny holidays, and UNiDAYS have brought us a round-up.  The platform’s 2024 index study has evaluated everything from hostel prices to beer prices, as well as safety rating, average meal cost, the price of a one-way transport ticket, the number of group activities, and the population of international students.  So, where ranked as the best place to travel as a student for this year? That would be Tbilisi, the lovely Georgian capital, which scored 7.32 out of 10. The average cost of a pint here is just £1.87 (€2.19), and the majority of its attractions are pretty close together, making it easy to explore the city on foot.  In second place, it was Lisbon, which ranked well for safety, and in third, it’s Yerevan in Armenia aka ‘the Pink City’ – a meal here costs just £7.18 (€8.41). However, this list is by no means just a cheap-sheet. Reykjavik claims spot number five, and though it’s notoriously unaffordable, you can’t argue that those geothermal pools look like a pretty good spot to detach from your exam stress.  Here are the best places to travel as a student in Europe Tbilisi, Georgia Lisbon, Portugal

Ranked: Europe’s most sustainable cities

There are plenty of European destinations that are making a conscious effort to reduce their emissions or look after their green spaces, but which are the most sustainable?  A new study has been conducted (ironically) by DiscoverCars.com to find out. In the three largest cities from each European country, the car hire company collected data on everything from number of vegan restaurants and nature spots to closest airports and the proportion of hotels with EV charging points. Each city was then given a score out of 100, and ranking as the most sustainable city in Europe is Scotland’s glorious capital. That’s right – Edinburgh’s low pollution levels and solid vegan restaurant offering mean it beat out all other European cities, with a total score of 89.  In second place, it’s Zurich – recently named Europe’s most liveable city – where five percent of hotels have EV charging points, and it closely followed Edinburgh with a total score of 88. Paris came in third place with 86, largely thanks to its more than 300 green spaces.  But that’s far from all the sustainable cities to visit in Europe – the top 20 are right here.  There are the 20 most sustainable cities in Europe, according to DiscoverCars.com Edinburgh, Scotland Zurich, Switzerland Paris, France Barcelona, Spain Rotterdam, Netherlands Hamburg, Germany Ghent, Belgium Copenhagen, Denmark Turin, Italy Limerick, Ireland Salzburg, Austria Vaduz, Liechtenstein Budapest, Hungary Luxembourg City, Luxembourg Gothenburg, Sweden

UNESCO just listed 18 new geoparks around the world

Our glorious planet is dotted with absolutely stunning national parks, but certain protected green spaces are recognised specifically for their geological heritage and how it serves local communities.  Enter the UNESCO Global Geopark designation. Founded in 2015, the programme recognises ‘single, unified geographical areas’ managed with a bottom-up approach that combines conservation, sustainable development and community involvement.  And 18 new ones have just been added to the list, making the total 213 across 48 different countries. What makes UNESCO’s newest geoparks so special? The Enshi Grand Canyon-Tenglongdong Cave park in China is home to a remarkable karst landscape of steep cliffs, deep gorges and caves, whereas Meteora Pyli in Greece features sandstone cliffs dotted by Byzantine-era monasteries.  There’s also the Bükk Region in Hungary, where 300 million-year-old rock sequences have been altered by volcanic activity, and Impact Crater Lake in Finland, formed by a meteorite collision 78 million years ago, leaving behind the largest crater lake in Europe.  António Abreu, director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences at UNESCO, told the BBC that ‘UNESCO Global Geoparks represent landscapes where internationally significant geological heritage intertwines with human history and supports rich biodiversity.’  Here are the 18 dazzling new entries.  These are UNESCO’s 18 new geoparks  Schelde Delta UNESCO Global Geopark, Belgium and the Netherlands Uberaba UN

This is the latest European town to sell a house for €1

This is the latest European town to sell a house for €1

There can’t be many of us who’d turn down the opportunity to live in a quaint little house in a quaint little town somewhere in the European countryside. Luckily, that chance has just arisen – and it might be a little more affordable than you think.  The French town of Saint-Amand-Montrond, down the road from Bourges in central France, has announced it is selling a two-bedroom house for just €1, and it’s looking for prospective buyers.  That’s right, for just €1 (that’s a measly 85p) you could acquire an entire property. It has a living room, kitchen and loo on the ground floor, plus two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, along with a courtyard and a garage. Not too shabby, right? Well, it is a little shabby. While the asking price of €1 is probably kicking around in your pocket somewhere, what you’ll be buying is a bit of a fixer-upper. The house hasn’t been lived in for 12 years, and the town hall estimates the cost of renovating to be a whopping €127,800 (£109,000).  But don’t let that burst your très chic bubble – much like the homes that have gone up for sale in Sicily and Sant’Elia a Pianisi over the last couple of years, you won’t have to cover the costs of all those works yourself.  François Blondieau, the town’s deputy in charge of urban planning, told Ouest France that the town would offer the new owner ‘significant subsidies’ towards the renovations.  Applications to buy the house opened on April 1 and will close on June 15.
