Something exciting is coming to São Bento station. Opening in May 2024 (yes, next month!), Time Out Market Porto will bring you the best of the city’s food and drink scene under one roof.

There is so much great food in Porto. We’d even go as far to say it’s a bit of an underrated food destination, if that phrase wasn’t so overused. But the fact of the matter is that if you’re visiting Porto, its food scene should be very high on your list.

Soon, the city’s best food will all be in one place: Time Out Market Porto.

From classic Portuguese cuisine to dishes you’ve never heard of before, the market will be home to 12 truly brilliant restaurants and two bars, curated by the Time Out editorial team. We’ve got everything you need to know about the market, right here.

What is Time Out Market?

Ever read one one of Time Out’s lists? ‘The best restaurants in Porto,’ for example, or the ‘best bars’?

Well, the Time Out Market was born out of our lists. We wanted to bring our restaurant guides to life, and the result was an epic culinary journey for locals and visitors alike.

The first ever Time Out Market was actually founded in Portugal; Time Out Market Lisbon, which opened in 2014, and has since become a foodie staple in the city.

Since then, we’ve launched markets in New York, Cape TownBostonChicagoDubai and Montreal. And now? Porto is following in Lisbon’s footsteps, and getting its very own.

When will Time Out Market Porto open?

The market will open in May 2024. The date of the opening night is to be confirmed, so check back for updates.

Where is it?

Time Out Market Porto will be located on the south wing of São Bento train station. If you’ve been to Porto, you’ll know this isn’t just any train station. São Bento is one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, built on top of an abandoned convent in 1916.

The station has long been one of Porto’s top attractions – the interior is covered in 20,000 tiles telling stories from the city’s history. Time Out Market Porto has been built into its wing, surrounded by a magnificent courtyard with historic brick walls covered in climbing plants (the area is actually a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The 2,000-square-metre market’s eateries will face out onto the courtyard, which will be filled with tables and chairs to sit and eat at, as well as feature a 20-metre-high glass and iron structure, designed by Porto born architect (and 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize Winner) Eduardo Souto de Moura. Yes, we’re as excited as you are.

What will you find at the market?

The market offers 12 restaurants and two bars. Every restaurant at the market is handpicked by the Time Out Porto editorial team; all feature in our lists, and all have recieved a rating of four stars or higher by our critics.

You’ll find everything from classic street food to Michelin-starred dining, all delivered by local chefs and restauranters.

Which chefs and restaurants will be there?

About half of the eateries coming to Time Out Market Porto have been announced already, and things are looking tasty. Fava Tonka, a veggie restaurant in the city, was one of the first to be announced, followed by seafood spot Meia-Nau and Okra, a Neapolitan pizza in Mirigaia.

The team from Tábua Rasa, will also be there, serving up their loaded charcuterie boards, along with Brusco Burger and iconic Portuguese bakery Padaria Ribeira, founded in 1878.

But that’s not all. A star-studded second line-up has finally been announced, with four fantastic Michelin-starred chefs added to the roster. You’ll find their profiles below.

We’ll be updating this page frequently with every new announcement, so make sure to check back for more details!
